A Very Sacred Place: Tanah Lot Temple in Bali

Photograph by Doug Mackenzie. Doug has returned many times to sit and take in the serene beauty, spirituality and just listen to the waves at Tanah Lot Temple. He particularly finds sunset to be an especially stunning time to visit.

Doug’s photography captures my mind. I find researching history interesting, finding the folk lore and the stories that make up the building blocks of some areas. Reading about the temple was very intriguing and captivated my imagination.

Tanah Lot Temple in Bali, Indonesia was built to worship the Bhatara Segara, or the Sea God. To protect the temple, he created a poisonous snake from his sash. The sea snake is believed to be living at the base of this rocky island, to guard the temple from evil intruders.

Legend says that a princess was about to get married until the last moment with the prince broke the promise. Her heart filled with anger, so she cursed the island for unmarried couples that visit the temple. Her curse was that their relationship would be doomed to end in disaster.

Tanah Lot is one of the seven main sea temples located along the southwestern coast of Bali.
